We go back in time, back to December 2018. USA Boxing held the national Golden Gloves in Denver, Colorado. Mercedes Carter has qualified for the final phase of the tournament, a one-week event.

Mercedes entered as a Welterweight, her natural weight class. She came in with 52 wins and 4 losses. The double Detroit Golden Gloves champion is among the amateur boxing elite in the United States and a strong candidate to win the national title.

Winning the Golden Gloves would be an important step for Mercedes’ dream to participate in the Olympic Games in 2020. It doesn’t act as a qualification since qualifiers are held separately in 2019, but it would provide valuable experience and recognition in the run-up to the biggest amateur boxing tournament on Earth.
