Mercedes Carter targets the Olympic Games in 2020

After the final training session ahead of the Golden Gloves tournament, Mercedes Carter and her coach Carl Williams have a little chat.

Carl: “Hey, have ya made yer mind about Olympics or turnin’ pro?”

Mercedes: “Yes! I wanna go to Tokyo 2020! I can always turn pro later. Ya trained me so damn hard to be elite. I wanna get Olympic gold, pops!”

Carl: “Good kid. Dats da way to think. There ain’t that many peoples who can do it. We gotta try. Ya’ll have to work with the national coach when yer in Japan, instead of me, but hey, anythin’ for ya to chase dat dream.”

[This discussion pre-dates Anne Carter’s early January participation at the London Internationals.]

Mercedes: “Also, mah cousin Anne called and she wants more trainin’. She be wantin’ to box more. She be comin’ right after da nationals to work with me. Signed up for London Internationals, at Lightweight.”

Carl: “Oh, really?”

Mercedes: “Dats right. If ya don’t mind, I’d be trainin’ her more often and helpin’ her compete between mah fights. She be serious, methinks.”

Carl: “If she be serious, then dats fine. She can stay with us when she be comin’ over to Detroit.”

Mercedes: “Dat means ye’d support me ’til 2020 and help Anne a bit, too. Ya sure ya don’t mind?”

Carl: “I know ya love Anne, kid. She be a good kid. She be family. Don’t ya worry, done deal. When I’m trainin’ ya, she can work with us.”

Mercedes: “Sweeeeeeet. How will I ever thank ya?”

Carl: “By kickin’ ass.”
