Kayleigh Argues With Jim

If there ever was a definition of a ‘fighting household’ it is the Parsons family. ‘Fireball’ Jim Parsons is a top welterweight prospect that seems poised to capture a British title before moving on to the world stage.

‘The Fluke’ Kayleigh Parsons is an undefeated Featherweight. It would hardly be surprising to find that the two children of the marriage, Sam and Jenny, atop the preschool pound for pound rankings, if such a thing existed.

But all is not well in the Parsons household. While Jim has continued a strong rise up the ranks, Kayleigh is coming off a draw with Virani MacVicar, in a fight that most observers thought that she lost, and many would claim she was lucky to see the final bell.

Marriages often go through rocky periods. This may seem to test the bond that the Parsons have.

It’s a quiet afternoon in the Parsons household. Jim and Kayleigh return from training to their flat in North London. The kids are out of the home for the time being. The time is ripe for an argument that has been brewing for some time.

After doing the remainder of the dishes from last night, and giving his wife the silent treatment while doing so, Jim finally gets down to brass tacks.

“So,” said Jim, folding his arms across his chest, “Do you have anything to say for yourself?”

“What are you on about?” retorted Kayleigh.

Kayleigh Jim argue 1

“Your spar today with that girl, Karla. You made her take a knee twice. That was supposed to be a gentle ‘welcome back to contact sparring.’ You aren’t supposed to go out there and make an example of your sparring partner. This was to get your fitness back!”

“Then you should have let me spar with someone better,” Kayleigh responded hotly, “I was getting back into the swing of things, so you should have given me someone that was worth my time!”

Jim turned his back to his wife, pressing his hands together over his face, a gesture of frustration if there ever was one.

“Listen Kayleigh, you are my wife. You are the mother of my children. But it kills me to watch you in the gym. Do you know why I’m the one coaching you now?”

“Because I wanted you to be,” replied Kayleigh.

“No, it was because the last 3 coaches you had either you fired, or quit. I was the only one left that even wanted to deal with the task of training you.”

“Bullshit.”

“No bullshit, Kay!” replied an exasperated Jim. “You’re so driven that you piss everyone off enough that they don’t want to work with you! It’s the shit like you dropping Karla today that makes people not want to associate with you! They don’t like you!”

Kayleigh Jim argue 2

“I don’t need them.”

Jim looks at the ceiling for a moment, “Yes, you do, babe. You know how that girl Virani improved so quickly? The first fight was close, but you dropped her with a beautiful punch that put her out like a light. You were the better fighter. The rematch was a year later, and guess what, she bossed you in that rematch. She left you out on your feet and lucky to get a draw. You know how she did that? She had people around her that helped her. Even that Emma girl that you beat up like a punching bag? She helps Virani get better because she at least provides quality sparring. I have to pay girls to come in a spar with you, and no one good ever takes me up on the offer. You are stagnating because you think that you don’t need help. Guess what? You do.”

“That Virani girl is not better than me. The draw was a fair result.”

Jim laughed sarcastically, “Kayleigh, there’s no one else here, you can admit to me that you got lucky. In fact, I want you to say it. Say that Virani beat you. There’s no shame in it…that chick is good.”

Kayleigh glared coldly at her husband, “It sounds like I need a new trainer.”

“That’s exactly the shit I’m talking about, babe! I’m the person that cares most about you in this world. I want you to succeed. But you always take everything as an attack against you. You can’t improve like this. You’ll be the same fighter you were last year, and you’ll be beaten.”

Kayleigh goes quiet and takes a few deep breaths, “Okay. She beat me. She got lucky that I was off my game…”

Kayleigh Jim argue 3

“Bullshit. She beat you because she was better.”

Kayleigh purses her lips, “You really think so.”

“I saw it live, babe.”

“Okay….she was better than me that night.”  Kayleigh’s mouth twisted into a smile, “But I’m still undefeated.”

“And I think you can go undefeated your whole career, Kayleigh.”  Jim let his hands drop to his sides and let out a deep breath.  “Look, I know that you aren’t a bad person.  You are caring, sweet, and a great mother.  But you are so driven that you have become arrogant.  Arrogant fighters get what is coming to them eventually.  I just don’t want to see you hurt.”

Jim’s words finally seem to land on Kayleigh, who turns her back for a moment.

Kayleigh Jim argue 4

“Are we still on for the dream?” Kayleigh asked.

Jim smiled, “First husband and wife to both have a world title fight on the same card?  It’s the thing I want most in my professional career.”

Kayleigh turned back around, “It’s what I want too.”

Jim nodded, “Okay.  Do you trust me to help you achieve your potential, just as you help me achieve mine?”

Kayleigh smiled slightly, “How do I help you achieve your goal?”

“By being the light of my life,” Jim replied simply.

Kayleigh’s frosty demeanor melted slightly.  “I know I can get a bit carried away at times.  I’ll try to keep my feet on the ground okay?  But, seriously, can you get me someone decent to spar with.  Please?”

Jim embraced his wife for a moment, “I’ve got my eye on this redhead that I think will fit the ticket quite nicely…”

“If she stares at you for too long, I’ll end her,” remarked Kayleigh with an equal hint of playfulness and hidden menace.

Jim laughed.

“I’m serious!” Kayleigh protested, but had to laugh when her husband picked her up to bring her to his eye level.

“I love you,” he intoned solemnly.

“I love you too, babe.”
