Spicy pork chop

A freshly minted champion challenges Taylor Grant

The curtain will soon fall on the stage at the Ball Arena in Denver. Chelsea Carter wins the American Super Lightweight championship by knockout against Amber Rose. News are about to break.

Before the official particulars, officials hand over the title belt. Alesia does the honours by putting it on High Voltage’s waist.

Summer: “Tough fight, but good job. Don’t let anyone tell you that you don’t deserve it. A KO is a KO.”

Chelsea: “Thanks. Don’t worry, they’ll hear it.”

Mercedes: “We be movin’ forward, pork chop!”

Summer: “Such a pretty belt, too.”

Ring announcer: “Ladies and gentlemen, please offer a round of applause for two warriors who gave a serious show!”

Of course, the audience can’t say no to that.

Ring announcer: “Your winner, by knockout at 2:29 in Round 10, from San Francisco AND NEW American Super Lightweight champion… Chelsea ‘High Voltage’ Carrrrterrrrrrrr!”

Her fans, some of them new, cheer for a victory that they were not expecting.

Jim: “American boxing has a new queen at Super Lightweight. She came in as the underdog and faced a stiff challenge, but boxing being what it is, the race can turn on a dime at any point with one punch.”

Warren: “Rose’s quality gave Carter plenty of trouble in this match, but she demonstrated how dangerous she is when opening fire. Five clean knockouts is her last six fights, some of them against durable boxers, make it clear that she means business.”

While Chelsea celebrates her win, Amber has to deal with the agony of defeat. A timeless contrast in sports, which is especially powerful in boxing. When you get in the ring, you don’t simply risk having goals scored against you. One brutal punch adds a lot of pain to the experience of losing.

Catarina: “I’m so sorry, Amber.”

Caitlin: “We still got your back, babe.”

Hanna: “I know it’s tough, but you can bounce back from this. It’s boxing. The biggest deal now is accepting the result without shame.”

Jim: “Congratulations, Chelsea Carter. You won the American championship belt in dramatic fashion. Did you doubt the idea of going for it with this much intensity?”

Chelsea: “If you doubt, you shouldn’t box. I had to commit.”

Jim: “Will you admit that you were losing this fight after nine rounds?”

Chelsea: “Well yeah. I was in it. I knew I was trailing and that I needed to put her to sleep. Mercedes made me pick between retiring on the stool and going nuclear. Guess what: the bomb landed.”

Jim: “Anyone but your most hardcore fans, and perhaps even some of them, will say that Amber Rose was the better fighter before that moment. What do you say to them?”

Chelsea: “Were we fencing for points, I’d agree that catching up was impossible. But this is boxing. We’re in the hurt business. Points on the scorecards mean nothing if you get laid out. You still lose. I knocked her out. I’m explosive, I’m opportunistic, I didn’t cheat and I’m the American champion. 100%.”

Jim: “Is there a rematch clause?”

Chelsea: “Yes, but I advise against using it. You saw the damage done when I landed clean. I’ll only get more dangerous with time. Think twice before you challenge me.”

Jim: “That’s confident for someone who took a knee in Round 9. And a contract is a contract.”

Chelsea: “Nobody can sign for a title fight without that clause. I don’t find it fair to be obliged to fight at least twice for a title, and I don’t want to get into the Fury-Wilder thing. If the clause is triggered, I can always vacate and whoever wins it is a paper champion. Having the American belt is nice, and I earned it, but my eyes are set on something else. Or rather, someone else. Taylor Grant. Surely she’s watching tonight? She said she wanted the winner of this match. Let’s dance in 2022.”

Chelsea: “One last thing. I want to thank my cousin and coach Mercedes. Without her, I wouldn’t have this belt. She’s a genius. Also thanks to my friend Alesia, who is an inspiration, a friend and a damn good backer. Special thanks also to my sparring partners. Your work in the gym makes these wins possible.”

Jim: “Next to me is Amber Rose. Amber, you were leading but Chelsea scored the big punch that turned the fight around. What can you tell us now?”

Amber: “It’s disappointing. Obviously. All this work to get stopped by a brutal punch. I really wish I could have that Round 9 back and finish the job before she could take a knee. But she’s got a point. The ring’s not safe until you heard the final bell. Especially with that kind of explosive fighter. She dropped me and the lead lost its meaning.”

Jim: “What about the action in Round 10? She was really aggressive.”

Amber: “How was I supposed to expect what she did? Impossible. She went in with the mentality that ‘someone gets knocked out’, even if it means ending on her butt. No one can sustain that effort for a full round. It’s as risky as it gets, and she got a little lucky.”

Jim: “Was the swollen left eye ever a factor?”

Amber: “No. I was doing just fine before taking the big shot.”

Jim: “Will you trigger the rematch clause?”

Amber: “Tonight’s not the night for Chelsea to bring Taylor Grant in the ring or for me to promise that I’ll trigger the rematch clause. This isn’t wrestling where the next fight starts right away. Let’s think rationally, in due time. I’ll weigh my options.”

Jim: “Mercedes Carter. We see you coaching ringside when Chelsea fights. Your thoughts on tonight’s match?”

Mercedes: “I’m so proud of Chelsea. We knew how tough this match would be, and Amber proved it with solid fighting. Yeah, we were behind but that doesn’t matter anymore. We won. That’s that.”

Chelsea thinks: “Damn. She’s changing the way she talks for television.”

Jim: “What’s in your plans now?”

Mercedes: “Like Chelsea said, the American belt is nice. I’m proud of having produced a national champion but what I truly want is a world champion. That’s what you aim for when you join the professional ranks. We know that tonight was a rough night at the office. There’s work to do and we’ll get to it.”

Jim: “What do you want to improve?”

Mercedes: “Chelsea will be the only one to hear that for strategic reasons. Tonight, we have a win to celebrate.”
